You can be scarred for life by the sword as it maims you, cuts into your skin and draws blood, but it is death by the bow that leaves you cold and frightened, the artist’s revenge and thoughts of cold bloodied murder always more palpable as the strings are drawn and the fire in the cold stare is highlighted across the bridge and the arm, drawing back till something snaps and the music becomes a requiem.

Sometimes all a Timelord needs in life is a little mystery, a little horror to stir their blood. It is what makes life that little more spark filled, a little more intriguing and whilst it is only a handful of Timelords hold fast to this ethos, for the everyday, for the ordinary person, it is a staple of life that makes the heart race and pump faster, it is the human factor that makes life so sweet.

Everybody is susceptible to the crowded thoughts that linger in the mind, after all the brain is a curious mystery, an enigma that is hard enough for one soul to carry across their natural lifespan, let alone a being to whom eleven would be enough to drive even the very best of us completely and utterly mad.

Terry Nation’s Survivors: Audio Drama Review. Big Finish.

For those that remember with fondness or indeed with a tightening grip of fear Terry Nation’s 1970s apocalyptic serial Survivors, the frightening aspect of a civilisation falling apart very quickly is one that is perhaps the most powerful and enduring images of its time and is probably matched only by the television film Threads a decade later. To see it happen on screen as part of a drama is one thing but to have it re-recorded by audio drama specialists Big Finish, already the guardians of the legacy of Doctor Who in audio form as well as establishing a great following with their episodes of the likes of The Avengers, Sapphire and Steel and Blake’s 7, is quite a different proposition.

It is unusual to find the fifth Doctor’s incarnation adrift in time and space without any of his much loved companions keeping a watchful eye on him, to bounce their anxieties off him or even just to make sure he stays on the right side of compassion. This latest story from Big Finish, The Burning Prince, sees the fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison, do exactly that and it is a surprisingly frightening prospect.
