Two’s company, two is the sound of laughter taken to great heights, two is a sequel to which a comedy penned by the superb duo of Dave Kirby and Nicky Alt is completely on top of its game and is one that surely will be seen as a true worthy successor to a production worth its weight in Liverpool gold.

It is undoubtedly one of the finest productions to come out of Merseyside in the last ten years, a difficult birth it may have been, a show that found itself with an audience but being put on due to commitments and other factors somehow making the play seem an impossibility and yet a decade on, over 200,000 members of the public later, Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels is a show of insurmountable honest and terrifically funny appeal; so much so that it is only right and proper for it to come back to the Royal Court Theatre and give the jolt of marvellous humour needed after a January of gloom and false starts.
The Liverpool Comedy Festival is something to be proud of in the city. It captures the imagination of a collection of people for whom humour is their greatest asset. It has seen them through everything, from recessions, depressions and war, through political battles and turmoil. It has given them armour when the nation’s eye has turned against them and it has laughed alongside them and it has sheltered them from the worst excess of degeneration that the island of Westminster has seen fit to try and hurl their way. No amount of mud-slinging, of false accusations, so called friendly fire and destructive bombs can stop the people of Liverpool from enjoying it seems a well-timed joke, great plays, the well-armed comedian and the poets who set out to raise a smile.

For the fifth time in as many years Brick up the Mersey Tunnels arrived at the Royal Court Theatre to a great fanfare and armed to the teeth with well loved gags and up to date topics that would make any other show seethe with jealousy.
