When you have seen the joke before, the punchline becomes inevitable…

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.

You can’t keep a good hedgehog down, and even if it is only for nostalgia’s sake, the name of Sonic is one that, like the Duracell Bunny, seems to keep going, and going…until, well you get the picture.

If the subject character is interesting enough, if the obvious flaws in style can be ignored, then there is no reason why a film cannot be found to be entertaining in any circumstances; where a film that relies on fondness for pop culture entertainment, especially one aimed financially at a generation to the one that is being explored, asked to reminisce of the hours spent in pursuit of early gaming, that is where the whole edifice can collapse, come crashing down around the ears of memory.

You do have to wonder sometimes about cinema and the film industry when it finds ways to bring out the worst in the genre. It seems to be a problem that continues for the most part with what is loosely termed- American comedy, a sink hole into which its small screen cousin always hits absolute highs, and yet it cannot transfer to the pulling power available to the longer format.

There are some individuals in this world who when you come across them make you glad to be alive. Not for the passion of love, but for the sheer scale of their ambition to create something so unique that it can never be topped, something so artistic, so elegant, so completely and utterly insane that it screams with joy when you see it visualised.
