Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

There is a gracefulness to be thanked for, saluted even, when it comes to enjoying an evening in the presence of one of the finest songwriters of British Pop/Rock history; for when you are in the company of Graham Gouldman and 10cc you instinctively feel the elegance and accomplished hand of musical professionalism resound throughout the venue and reflect the light like diamonds of the faces of the sell-out crowds that give any evening its permanent vibe.

There should be no argument that Graham Gouldman is one of the most important and interesting songwriters in British music history; the facts speak for themselves when you look at the impressive array of songs he wrote for other bands as a very young man, talent so enlightening, so frighteningly superb, it is truly inspiring to know that the man on stage before you is responsible for some of the biggest selling records in pop history.

They remain an enigma, the product of fusion, of two distinct writing styles between the members that graced the name and the now iconic nature of the band, a natural progression from the 60s fashion in which they could trace the first roots of the group and one that quite rightly is still performing today, albeit with only one original member at the helm. 10cc were a group of diversity, of experimentation and of a solid reliability, you could not fault them in the day and anyone taking time out to devour the rich back catalogue will soon follow the point that you don’t have to just like 10cc, you have to love them unconditionally as well.

For some the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool is a natural home, a place where outstanding music and appreciation go hand in hand; the circle of harmony forever ongoing and in time. Some artists though don’t just make the sound they deliver welcoming to the acoustically acute ears of those that walk through the entrance to the venue on perhaps arguably the most appropriately named street in the city, they give it room to breathe and nestle in the very fabric of the building’s infrastructure; they make it live.

The Wall Street Shuffle was a hit for 10cc in 1974 but the current financial situation made it an apt opener to their Birmingham show.

Even though Graham Gouldman is now the original member in the group, he was ably assisted by Rickk Fenn on guitar, Paul Burgess on drums, Keith Hayman on bass and keyboards and MIck Wilson  on guitars, vocals, keyboards and percussion.

These five men blended together so well on stage that it left a near capacity audience anticipating each song with relish.

Graham Gouldman is one of music’s nice guys and rather than adhering to the proverb of nice guys finishing last, it’s quite easy to see by looking at the faces of every audience member at every gig, that his, and that of 10cc, appeal and fortitude has seen his through to be one of the elder statesmen of the British music scene.

Much respected for his contribution to music across six decades, Graham Gouldman effortlessly plays the music that has thrilled generations of music fans and can have any crowd, no matter how fickle, stop and listen and ultimately love him.

There’s something comforting about hearing an old master return to the studio and release a brand new album of songs. Songs that strike a chord in the heartstrings and gives the listener the realisation that no matter the public may think from time to time, there is always a place for the older statesmen of British Rock to make excellent music.
