The Liver Birds Come Flying Home As Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre Announces New Show For 2018.

Liverpool’s Royal Court is delighted to announce a new show for 2018 as Liver Birds Flying Home is the brand new musical based on the landmark television series The Liver Birds by Carla Lane and Myra Taylor.

A co-production with James Seabright and George Seaton directed by Benji Sperring, it features all new music by Barb Jungr and Level 42’s Mike Lindup with an original script by Barb Jungr, George Seaton and Linda McDermott. Fully supported by Carla Lane and her family, the show brings the audience up to date with Beryl and Sandra as they are now.

Beryl and Sandra were the Liver Birds, the embodiment of 1970s swinging Liverpool. Red and blue, north and south, posh and streetwise, the world was theirs for the taking. But one stayed and the other left.

Forty years after they tore up the city, the Liver Birds are reunited as if nothing has changed, but everything has. Can things be like they used to be – or are their lives like a bag of broken biscuits?

An exploration of the way things are and the way things were, this is a musical that will delight fans of the original series as well as introducing the characters to a new generation.

A one-off concert performance in Liverpool in 2017 received a standing ovation from the sell-out audience and five star reviews favourably comparing it with Blood Brothers.

Kevin Fearon, Executive Producer at Liverpool’s Royal Court is excited to be bringing the show to Liverpool, “The Liver Birds is a T.V. legend and we are delighted to be bringing Beryl and Sandra home. I have very fond memories of watching the show so when we were approached with this project I jumped at the chance to get involved.”

George Seaton, Producer and co-writer, was always a fan of Carla Lane, “The quality of Carla’s writing is staggering and she was rightly protective of Beryl and Sandra. I’m thrilled that our idea to bring their lives into the present day met with her approval and honoured to be involved in continuing the story of The Liver Birds.”

Barb Jungr, lyricist and co-writer, was inspired to create this musical on seeing the Liver Birds while walking through Liverpool on a rainy Saturday afternoon with George Seaton. “Women’s lives, their hopes and dreams and the innocence of their young selves. That’s all of us, isn’t it.

Liver Birds Flying Home is suitable for audiences of all ages. Casting will be announced soon.
