Liverpool Playhouse To Stage World Première Of Coen Brothers’ The Hudsucker Proxy.

This summer Liverpool Playhouse stage the world première of The Hudsucker Proxy, a new stage adaptation of the classic 1994 film written by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen and Sam Raimi. The play is co-produced with Southampton’s Nuffield and internationally acclaimed theatre company Complicite. The play runs at the Williamson Square venue from Wednesday 3rd to Saturday 27th June.

The cast is headed up by Joseph Timms (Privates on Parade, Noel Coward; Twelfth Night and Richard III, Belasco Theatre NYC; Bracken Moor, Tricycle Theatre, Atlantis, B.B.C.1) as Norville Barnes, the unexpected hero who finds himself at the top of Hudsucker Industries.

Gemma Bodinetz, Everyman & Playhouse Artistic Director, said, “From its inception this co-production with the Nuffield of the world premiere of the stage adaptation of the Coen Brothers’ Hudsucker Proxy with such an inventive creative team has been an extraordinarily exciting part of our season. We are delighted that the world renowned Complicite have joined us as partners and that we have assembled such a talented and distinguished cast.”

Sam Hodges, Nuffield’s Director and Chief Executive, said, “We’re thrilled to have Complicite come on board as a partner on this very exciting project – we look forward to exploring the possibility of touring this production around the world with them in the future.

This production marks the first time a Coen Brothers’ film has been adapted for the stage. Based on the Coen Brothers’ joyful, wise-cracking romantic comedy that established them among the most entertaining and distinctive film-makers of our time, the production is directed by Simon Dormandy and Toby Sedgwick (War Horse, The 39 Steps).

The ensemble cast are Rob Castell (The Snow Queen, Nuffield/Royal and Derngate; We Will Rock You, international tour; Playing It Straight, E4), Nick Cavaliere (City of Angels, Donmar Warehouse; Zorro, West End), Tamzin Griffin (Far Away, Young Vic; Emil And The Detectives, National Theatre), Sinead Matthews (A Time to Reap, Royal Court; The Changeling, Young Vic; Mr Turner, Thin Man Films/Film4) Nathan McMullen (Misfits, E4; Doctor Who, B.B.C.1; Macbeth, Liverpool Everyman), David Webber (Captain Phillips, Columbia Pictures), and Clive Wood (Flare Path, Theatre Royal, Haymarket; Anthony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare’s Globe).
